IYO is bringing Handel’s operatic masterpiece Agrippina to Irish audiences in Limerick, Galway, Dublin and Armagh this year.
IYO provides an invaluable platform for young Irish singers to perform in full-scale professional operas chosen specifically to showcase their talents. The company also provides Irish audiences with the opportunity to enjoy this wealth of young Irish talent, some of which has not previously been heard in major roles in professional opera in Ireland
IYO debuted in 2014 with their successful touring production of The Rape of Lucretia in Wexford, Cork, Dublin and Dundalk, which gained the company a nomination for Best Opera in the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards. Dick O’Riordan of the Sunday Business Post said in his review “Seldom has a Benjamin Britten opera of such quality and commitment come our way, and its compelling staging by Irish Youth Opera revealed the new company as a valuable newcomer to opera production in Ireland.”
It is particularly exciting for the company to have 3 major collaborating partners on Agrippina – the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Northern Ireland Opera and the Lime Tree Theatre in Limerick.
IYO Artistic Director Colette McGahon says “ With funding from the Arts Council, IYO is proud to collaborate with partners of the calibre of Northern Ireland Opera, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Lime Tree Theatre in presenting Handel’s stunning opera Agrippina. All our partners play a crucial role by giving of their widely recognised expertise which together with a cast of the very best of Irish singers should prove an electric combination.”
“Northern Ireland Opera is delighted to be collaborating with Irish Youth Opera on their second production, Handel’s political comedy Agrippina,” said Northern Ireland Opera Artistic Director Oliver Mears. ”Handel wrote his youthful masterpiece when he was only 25, so we feel it’s especially appropriate that some of Ireland’s finest young singers will feature in this, our first production of a baroque opera. I look forward to working with the exceptionally talented Irish team and cast we have gathered together for this exciting project.’
“The Irish Chamber Orchestra is very excited by its upcoming first-ever collaboration with Irish Youth Opera on Agrippina, widely regarded as Handel’s first operatic masterpiece,” said Gerry Keenan of ICO. “The ICO is very committed to working with rising young talent and fosters every opportunity to develop and nurture young performers across the genres”
