Heyday; The Mic Christopher Story

Written & Directed by Alan Leonard

This heartfelt story charts singer-songwriter Mic Christopher’s humble beginnings busking on the streets of Dublin, his rise to rock star, the near fatal accident that nearly left him millimeters from death, through to his final year where he lead an entire generation of Irish musicians onto fame, success and new artistic highs.
Told through the eyes of those whose lives he touched (Oscar-winner Glen Hansard, writer/actor Sharon Horgan, Mike Scott of The Waterboys, Bronagh Gallagher, Josh Ritter, Lisa Hannigan, Rónán Ó’Snodaigh and many more. This epic story of extraordinary music and friendship will both touch and inspire.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: Mic Christopher’s life-story captured my imagination from the moment I first heard it. Once I began researching and delving into his music I was hooked, and knew it was a tale that other people needed to be introduced to.
Combining heartfelt interviews with re-enactments, archive footage, photographic animations, and drone photography we hoped to capture the essence of this extraordinary life-story. It’s themes of rebirth and redemption something I think will strike a cord with people.
At the very heart of this story Mic himself and of course his music. A fascinating, complex and warm person, his story resembling a tightly wound script at every turn, and of course there’s his rare ability to sing his songs pitch perfect every time, giving me the option to blend soulful live performances with studio-recorded album tracks several times across the film. This allowed Mic to seamlessly score his own movie.
Mic’s family, his former bandmates in The Mary Janes, and his wide circle of friends have been very supportive of the film. We were blessed that so many people shared personal footage and photography, from the seminal busking scene on Dublin’s Grafton Street to Mic’s final days on tour with his heroes ‘The Waterboys’ in 2001.
This is a story that needs to be told. I feel anybody that becomes exposed to Mics life and his music will be uplifted, inspired, and hopefully will look at life that little bit differently.
