I.NY presents

Belltable | Sat, Oct 7th | 8pm | €10

Over 11 days in October, I.NY explores and celebrates the deep and vibrant connection between Ireland and New York City. The festival invites artists, writers, musicians, educators, entrepreneurs and more to tell the story of how the Ireland New York relationship has impacted their personal, professional and creative lives.  It invites as well, an audience from home and abroad, to share their own stories, hear those shared by others, and experience the broader Ireland New York story through a diverse programme of cultural events.

Brooklyn (2015) follows young Irish immigrant Eilis Lace as she navigates her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Based on author Colm Toibín’s Costa Novel of the Year 2009, Brooklyn stars Irish actress Saoirse Ronan (Eilis Lace) and was adapted for screen by Nick Hornby. The film touches on subjects that Toibín returns to time and again in his writing; living abroad, Irish society, preservation of identity and loss.

Lured by the promise of America, Eilis leaves Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for New York City. The initial feelings of homesickness quickly fade as romance pulls Eilis into a loving relationship. As she begins to live a fulfilled and happy life in New York, her past soon interrupts her new-found freedom and she must choose between two countries and the lives within them.

Nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay, The I.NY film programme presents a special screening of ‘Brooklyn’ in the Belltable Arts Centre, Saturday October 7 at 8pm.
