IFI@Belltable – Indignation
Belltable | February 25th | 8pm | €8
Acclaimed screenwriter (The Ice Storm) and producer of some of the best American films of the last two decades (Lost in Translation, Brokeback Mountain), James Schamus makes his directorial debut with an adaptation of Philip Roth’s autobiographical novel from 2008.The year is 1951; Marcus Metzner’s (Logan Lerman) enrolment at Winesburg Ohio University exempts him from military service in Korea. On campus the principled young man locks ideological horns with roommates, teachers and deans alike, his sense of self being further challenged by the superior sexual confidence of Olivia (Sarah Gadon), for whom he is falling. To his credit, Schamus finds a cinematic language for Roth’s famously knotty prose and much of Indignation is comprised of increasingly impassioned conversations, the centrepiece of which being an extraordinary two-hander between the avowedly atheist Marcus and the equivocating Dean Caudwell (Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tracey letts).
