IFI@Belltable – Paterson
Belltable | Monday, 30th Jan. | 8pm | €8
Paterson (Adam Driver) is a bus driver in the town of Paterson, New Jersey; he’s also an aspiring poet, an admirer of William Carlos Williams, a famed Paterson chronicler. Jim Jarmusch’s gentle celebration of small town hopes and dreams is, however, nowhere near as self-referential as this scenario might appear. Paterson’s life is one of routine: he drives his bus, composing a few lines of poetry on his lunch break; he brings Marvin his English bulldog (Molly, a deserving winner of the Palm Dog at Cannes) for a nightly walk, stopping in for just one beer at his local before returning home to his wife Laura (Golshifteh Farahani), who hopes to become a professional baker, or country-and-western singer, whichever works out. Keenly attuned to the comedy of repetition, and the rhythms of a contented life, Jarmusch’s humanist film proves effortlessly charming. (Notes by David O’Mahony, IFI).
