‘True friendship burns forever’

Maeve Binchy was one of Ireland’s most loved and successful writers and it all started with her debut novel, Light A Penny Candle.

Although written in 1982, it is as relevant today as it was then: domestic abuse, abortion, alcoholism, and murder. All that and an enduring life-long friendship.

Aisling and Elizabeth have to survive DeValera’s Ireland, their raging hormones, and the struggle for independence in a world at war. Through it all, they discover that there is no right and wrong in this world, there is only what is right for those you love.

This is Maeve Binchy as you know her, and Maeve Binchy as you don’t.
