This WAS Your LIFE

A sparkling new play starring Bairbre Ni Chaoimh and Malachy McKenna

Belltable | Saturday, February 29th | 8pm | €18/€16

Maura Laverty, the multi-talented broadcaster, cookery expert, agony aunt and controversial writer, who was a household name in Ireland for three decades, is about to be spirited back from the dead to face a live and online audience on a surreal TV show ‘This WAS Your LIFE.’

She will cook recipes from her iconic cookbook, Full And Plenty, and talk about her rollercoaster life. The host will get her to reveal some of her darker secrets and the price she paid for her success. Fifty years after her death, how will a contemporary audience evaluate her recipes and her tumultuous life?

Broadcaster, writer, cookery expert and agony aunt Maura Laverty was a household name in Ireland for three decades. She had her own ESB-sponsored radio show on RTE for thirty years, where she dispensed advice on relationships and cooking. Her work was often controversial and her novels were banned by the censors for their sexual frankness. In the 1950s she wrote three plays that saved The Gate Theatre from financial ruin. In the ‘60s her iconic cookbooks with their unique blend of recipes and stories were to be found in nearly every home in Ireland. She toured the country giving cookery demonstrations on behalf of the ESB and encouraging women to use electric cookers and other labour-saving devices.
