Compañía Maria “la Serrana”

Santuario

Flamenco from the soul of sacred Andalucia

Belltable | Friday, April 3rd | 8pm | €23

Flamenco dancer María “la Serrana” learnt from the best: she has been Farruquito’s student for over 8 years, and studied with many more renowned gypsy dancers. Her style is both strong and sensual, a bit savage yet elegant. The company has toured throughout Ireland several times, but this is the first time you can see them in Limerick.

In her new show, Santuario, María will honor the heart and soul of the most sacred part of the flamenco art and the gypsy community. Flamenco is not only a dance, but as well singing and music. It is the heartfelt cry from the people who were persecuted by the Inquisition in the 16th century Andalucía, the southern part of Spain. Those people were the Jews, Moors and Gypsies. Later, the gypsies developed flamenco further and it became the glue to their society. Most of the styles that are sacred to them belong to the intimacy of the family. But now María will bring those styles to stage, together with a group of the most outstanding and renowned flamenco artists.

María will bring two of the most revered flamenco voices of the moment with her: Juan Jose Amador and Pepe de Pura. The guitar music is in the rhythmical hands of Luis Amador. Gypsy dancer Antonio Moreno “Polito” (who is Farruquito’s cousin) will be starring for the second time in Compañia María “la Serrana”. As a local special guest the company invites Joyce Richardson, Flamenco Ireland.

A sizzling and authentic flamenco evening not to be missed!
